Northrop Grumman announced a partnership with Apex Space to demonstrate space-based interceptors for the Golden Dome missile defense initiative in 2027. The demonstration will use technology from both companies and is self-funded under the Space Force's prize competition. Northrop Grumman stated it has completed key ground tests this year and is positioned to accelerate production.

Background on the companies Apex Space, headquartered in Los Angeles and founded in 2022, builds satellite buses for large low Earth orbit constellations. The company previously announced its own self-funded SBI demonstration called Project Shadow, planned by the end of 2026.

Northrop Grumman said the partnership builds on a $1 billion company-led investment in missile-defense technology. The company added that successful ground-test demonstrations position it to deliver on-orbit capability in 2027.

Program context The Space Force in April awarded 20 contracts with a potential total value of $3.2 billion to 12 firms for the SBI program. Northrop Grumman is participating through the prize competition structure. "We have already completed key ground tests this year and are uniquely positioned with Apex to rapidly accelerate and scale affordable production to defend the homeland," Ryan Tintner, vice president and general manager for Northrop's space superiority systems division, said in a news release.

"Apex was founded specifically to support proliferated constellations like Golden Dome," Ian Cinnamon, CEO and co-founder, said in the same release.
