Norway Approves Redevelopment of Three North Sea Oil and Gas Fields

Energy officials approved redevelopment plans for the Albuskjell, Vest Ekofisk and Tommeliten Gamma fields, which were shut down nearly 30 years ago. The projects involve four subsea facilities tied to existing infrastructure, with production slated to begin in 2028 and run through 2048.

Energy officials approved redevelopment plans for three oil and gas fields in the southern North Sea that were closed in 1998. The projects are expected to produce mostly gas with some condensate. Gas will be exported to Emden in Germany while condensate will be sent to a terminal in Britain.

Total investments are estimated at about 19 billion Norwegian kroner. Recoverable resources are projected at 90 to 120 million barrels of oil equivalent. Production is scheduled to start in late 2028 and continue until 2048. The fields were discovered in the 1970s and produced between 1977 and 1988 before shutdown.

The developments are expected to generate around 7,600 man-years of employment over their lifetime, with peak demand during construction and startup. Officials described the projects as creating substantial value for the community. They also highlighted the role of existing infrastructure in enabling the redevelopment.

Officials stated that Norwegian oil and gas output supports energy security in Europe. The approval comes after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine and amid the conflict in the Middle East. The operating companies include Vår Energi, ConocoPhillips, ORLEN and Petoro.

ConocoPhillips Skandinavia AS serves as operator for the developments. >"It is a pleasure to be able to approve the reopening of three fields in the North Sea.
