Norway beats Brazil 2-1 in World Cup round of 16 after Brazil misses first-half penalty

Erling Haaland scored in the 79th and 90th minutes to give Norway a 2-1 victory over Brazil in a World Cup round-of-16 match at MetLife Stadium. The win sent Norway to the quarterfinals for the first time and eliminated Brazil at the round-of-16 stage for the first time since 1990. Haaland's first goal came from a left-wing cross by Andreas Schjelderup.

His second was a low shot from outside the box. The Manchester City forward now has seven tournament goals, tying him with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé. Brazil missed a first-half penalty when goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland saved Bruno Guimarães' shot in the 14th minute.

Neymar converted a stoppage-time penalty for Brazil after a foul on Casemiro, but the goal came too late to change the outcome. Norway will face the winner of Mexico versus England in the quarterfinals. Coach Ståle Solbakken said the result represented one of the most significant moments in Norwegian men's soccer history.

Brazil had reached the quarterfinals in every World Cup from 1994 through 2022 before this match. The team has now lost its last six World Cup matches against European opponents since winning the title in 2002.
