Norway's national football team lost 2-1 to England in extra time during the World Cup quarterfinals on Saturday. The squad returned to Oslo on Monday and received a public welcome from more than 100,000 fans outside the royal palace. Players greeted supporters alongside the Royal Guard.
Norwegian military jets escorted the team's plane on its approach to the capital. Erling Haaland walked off the aircraft carrying a stuffed raccoon purchased in Dallas. Crown Prince Haakon joined players and supporters in the “Viking Row” chant while banging a drum.
The team later rode through Oslo on an open-top bus. Players continued celebrating with beer and waving to fans after dark. “I don’t think anyone had imagined this,” captain Martin Ødegaard told NRK.
“The support we have received in the USA and here at home in Norway has been beyond all expectations. ” Norway reached the quarterfinals in its first World Cup appearance since 1998 after defeating Ivory Coast and Brazil. Haaland scored seven goals in the tournament.
