NPR retracts erroneous story on Supreme Court justice retirement
NPR published and then retracted a report stating that a Supreme Court justice was retiring. The network issued two corrections after the legal affairs correspondent provided an explanation that differed from the public editor's account.

NPR published a story Tuesday headlined "Justice Samuel Alito, who wrote the opinion overturning Roe v. Wade, retires," then replaced it with an editor's note stating the report was "erroneously published." The network issued a statement from its top editor describing the report as a "misunderstanding" and said the correspondent would address the error on the program "All Things Considered."
Second correction NPR then issued a second correction to the public editor's account. The updated version stated the correspondent did not personally hear the announcement from the chief justice. " NPR said it would review its process for posting breaking news but did not respond to questions about possible discipline for the correspondent.
The 76-year-old justice has served on the court for more than 20 years.
