Numbers Etched in Grass on Washington Monument West Lawn Prompt Park Police Response
U.S. Park Police responded to a report of vandalism on the west lawn of the Washington Monument at approximately 11:30 a.m. The numbers “8647” were marked in the grass near Constitution Avenue NW.

Grass samples have been collected for testing. The investigation is ongoing. U.S. Park Police on site. A large etching of what appears to be the numbers “8647” has appeared on the National Mall between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool.
The numbers eight, six, and seven are clearly visible in a photo taken by Reuters from the Washington Monument. The live, aerial-viewpoint camera from the top of the monument also shows the numbers etched into the grounds. The area of the National Mall where the numbers are etched is right across Constitution Avenue NW from the White House.
It was not immediately clear when the numbers appeared on the lawn. The incident comes just ahead of President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday on Sunday, when a UFC fight on the White House lawn is scheduled. The Great American State Fair on the National Mall is set to begin on June 24.
“The deranged vandalism on our National Mall will not be tolerated. U.S. Park Police will investigate this incident and hold those responsible accountable,” a Department of the Interior spokesperson told the Washington Examiner.
