NV Energy plans to end its power agreement with Liberty Utilities in May 2027. Liberty Utilities informed California regulators on March 6 that NV Energy had reversed its earlier position on continuing the arrangement. NV Energy cited rising electricity demand from data centers near the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center and transmission constraints in northern Nevada.
Liberty Utilities receives about 75 percent of its electricity from NV Energy for the roughly 50,000 people it serves around Lake Tahoe. Nevada is home to at least 70 data centers. A 2026 study estimated that data centers could consume 35 percent of the state's electricity by 2030.
Danielle Hughes, a Lake Tahoe resident, stated: “It’s like we don’t exist. We’re 49,000 customers. ” NV Energy stated that the transition had been under discussion for years. A company spokesperson said: “To be clear, NV Energy is not cutting power.
