New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said during a PIX11 News interview that part of the increase in reported rapes results from an expanded legal definition of the offense and additional reports of incidents that occurred years earlier. The mayor also noted that the NYPD recorded some of the lowest numbers of murders and shootings in its history.
He said the rape statistics should be viewed with that context.
Rape is Rape Act, signed by Gov.
Kathy Hochul in January 2024 and effective in September 2024, broadened the definition of rape to include nonconsensual or forcibly compelled oral or anal sexual conduct in addition to vaginal penetration. NYPD CompStat data released last week showed a 6.6 percent increase in reported rapes compared with the same period last year.
