NYC Schools Budget Hits $43 Billion as Enrollment Falls
New York City allocates $43 billion annually to public schools despite a decline of 157,900 students over the past decade. Spending per student stands at $44,000 while test scores remain flat.
New York PostNew York City directs $43 billion each year to its regular public schools, according to a recent report. The amount equals roughly one-third of the city's $126 billion budget. Enrollment has fallen by 157,900 students over ten years, yet the city operates 39 more schools than before. Two hundred forty-nine of the 1,600 schools run below 50 percent capacity.
Spending per student reaches $44,000, the highest figure among states. Standardized math and reading scores have shown little change. Jeff Bezos stated Thursday that if Amazon operated like the city school system, packages would take six weeks to arrive, delivery would cost $100, and the wrong item would often be received.
The student population dropped 88,300 between the 2014-15 and 2020-21 school years, then fell another 69,600 by 2024-25. Officials estimate an additional decline of 153,000 students by 2034-35. State law includes provisions that maintain funding levels for schools even after large enrollment losses. The schools chancellor has criticized these funding rules and class-size requirements.
