The New York Police Department is adding 200 officers to the Bronx and dividing the borough into two separate patrol commands. Officials said the changes will increase resources and leadership for the area’s 12 precincts.
nypost.comOfficials said the changes are part of a restructuring aimed at addressing increased calls for service and operational demands.
The borough will now be divided into Patrol Borough Bronx North and Patrol Borough Bronx South. Officials stated that the split will bring additional specialized units and leadership to the 12 precincts. The department reported nearly one million 911 calls in the Bronx last year, the highest total among the five boroughs.
Officials noted that calls for service and workload have grown while the patrol structure had remained largely unchanged.
The department hired more than 4,000 officers last year, which officials described as the largest hiring year since records began. The additional officers will allow existing personnel to be reassigned to the Bronx without reducing resources in other areas.
Major crime in the Bronx fell more than 15 percent in April and 11 percent year-to-date, according to department data. The borough recorded its lowest number of murders in April with four incidents, and year-to-date murders total 32, five fewer than the same period last year.
Rapes rose 9 percent and transit crimes increased 21 percent year-to-date compared with the same period in 2025. Officials said the new structure is intended to address ongoing public safety needs. Assistant Chief Benjamin Gurley will lead Bronx North from the 48th precinct station, and Assistant Chief Brian Hennessy will oversee Bronx South from the 40th precinct house.
