The Cook Political Report on Wednesday moved the Ohio governor's race from lean Republican to toss-up. The change reflects polling that shows the Democratic nominee ahead or tied after several weeks of advertising. Republican nominee Vivek Ramaswamy and Democratic nominee Amy Acton are running to succeed Gov.
Mike DeWine. Acton previously served as the state's health director and appeared frequently on television during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Campaign spending and polling Acton reported raising $9.4 million in the most recent quarter. She has not yet begun television advertising. Polling averages compiled by 270 to Win show Acton at 48 percent and Ramaswamy at 46.7 percent.
Candidate messaging Ramaswamy has described Acton as a socialist and criticized her support for pandemic-era restrictions including stay-at-home orders and school closures. Acton has focused on affordability and portrayed Ramaswamy as disconnected from typical Ohio households. Ramaswamy has not previously held elected office in Ohio. He ran for president in 2024.
