Ohio Officials Find 16 Children Living in Feces-Filled Home During Unrelated Warrant Service

Police discovered 16 children living in a feces-filled room while serving an indecent-exposure warrant on a man at a Vinton County home last week. The children, described by officials as "almost feral," range in age from 18 months to 18 years and had been kept isolated in the 12-foot by 12-foot space for at least four years. None of the children had ever been enrolled in school.
Four adults were arrested and charged with multiple counts of child endangerment. The adults face up to 16 counts each and bonds of $300,000. The oldest child, an 18-year-old, is developmentally disabled and unable to write her name. Seven of the children were hospitalized, including two taken to trauma centers.
"One of the investigative challenges is that [the children] are limited. They can communicate, but it's extremely limited, and some not at all," said county Sheriff Ryan Cain. The man named in the original warrant is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
