Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 26 points and recorded 12 assists. Jared McCain added 24 points and Jaylin Williams scored 18 for Oklahoma City. The Thunder played without Jalen Williams, who sat out with left hamstring soreness.
The Spurs opened the game with a 15-0 run, the longest opening run in a conference finals game since the play-by-play era began in 1997. Victor Wembanyama scored 24 points, Devin Vassell added 20, and De’Aaron Fox had 15 points in his series debut. Oklahoma City’s bench outscored San Antonio’s bench 76-23, including 15 points from Alex Caruso.
The Thunder closed the first quarter on a 13-2 run after Wembanyama left the floor and trailed 31-26 at the end of the period.
The Thunder took their first lead at 35-31 on consecutive three-pointers by Gilgeous-Alexander and Williams. Emotions rose early in the second half when Stephon Castle was fouled on two dunk attempts, resulting in a flagrant-1 foul on Ajay Mitchell and technical fouls on Mitchell and Vassell.
Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said the team settled into half-court defense after the opening minutes. Gilgeous-Alexander stated the team focused on competing after the early deficit. Game 4 is scheduled for Sunday in San Antonio.
