Olivia Tops Girls' Names and Muhammad Tops Boys' Names in England and Wales for 2025

The Office for National Statistics released its annual data showing Muhammad as the most popular name given to boys born in England and Wales in 2025 and Olivia as the most popular name for girls.4 per cent of all birth names that year.

There were 300,715 male births and 284,681 female births among the total of 585,396 live births. The top 10 boys' names were Muhammad, Noah, Leo, Luca, Arthur, Oliver, George, Oscar, Theodore and Freddie. The top 10 girls' names were Olivia, Lily, Amelia, Isla, Florence, Freya, Poppy, Elsie, Ivy and Isabella.

The top 10 names overall accounted for 9.1 per cent of all births. Muhammad ranked first among boys in four of nine regions in England but placed 34th in Wales. Olivia ranked first among girls in three English regions and in Wales.

New entries to the top 100 included Eliana, Gracie, Anaya, Alba, Marnie, Lilah and Frankie for girls and Vincent, Carter, Stanley and Ruben for boys. Ada rose 54 places among girls while Roman rose 33 places among boys. Jessica fell 44 places and dropped out of the top 100 for girls, as did Ellie and Amelia.

Bodhi, Grayson and Brody fell out of the top 100 for boys. The rankings count exact spellings separately, so Mohammed placed 20th and Mohammad placed 55th among boys. Andrew reached a record-low level of popularity.
