A gunman opened fire in Midland, Texas on Friday morning, killing one person and wounding nine others before dying in a standoff with police. m. local time.
Gunfire began in one section of the city and continued near a veterinary hospital. Witnesses reported at least 40 shots fired. The suspect barricaded himself inside a building. Police Chief Greg Snow said officers heard additional gunfire from inside the building and worked to secure and clear the area.
Midland Memorial Hospital received nine victims. Four of the nine were in surgery and five were listed in stable condition. No officers were injured. Midland police later posted that the active-shooter incident had been resolved and the suspect was confirmed dead.
Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity or any information about a possible motive. Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick posted that "Texans are heartbroken" and asked residents to pray for the victims, their families, and first responders.
