A Redbridge Group/Accent Research poll published in the Australian Financial Review placed One Nation ahead of Labor for the first time and made the party the most popular in Australia. One Nation currently holds two of the 150 lower house seats. Pauline Hanson told 2GB radio on Monday that she has the ability to become prime minister.

She also signalled she would not support a real increase to the minimum wage when the independent Fair Work Commission hands down its annual decision on Tuesday. 2 percent in the 12 months to March. The Albanese government has backed a wage rise that is economically sustainable but above the rate of inflation.

Tanya Plibersek appeared on Channel 7’s Sunrise program alongside One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce. “Every opportunity they’ve had, they’ve actually voted against things that would make it easier, make life easier for Australians,” Plibersek said. Health minister Mark Butler said the federal budget would take some time to explain its contentious changes to negative gearing and the capital gains tax discount.

The government is promoting five separate changes to lower income tax that will deliver the average worker a benefit of up to $2,800 per year when fully implemented. Labor MP Mike Freelander, who represents the seat of Macarthur, said personal attacks on Hanson were wrong and counterproductive.

He cited the federal budget controversy, the cost-of-living crisis, and the Farrer by-election as factors that had gone in One Nation’s favour.

Freelander said One Nation’s support had peaked and the party would not be able to replicate its polling success at a federal election. He added that Labor should continue to examine how to improve people’s take-home pay and modify the tax system.
