OpenAI and Anthropic Both Weigh Token Price Cuts

OpenAI is considering price reductions on its tokens, the units used to bill customers for AI usage, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The San Francisco-based company is responding to anticipated cuts from rival Anthropic. Businesses have begun questioning the cost of AI tools.

Anthropic’s valuation reached $965 billion after a $65 billion financing round, surpassing OpenAI to become the most valuable AI startup. The company is led by CEO Dario Amodei, and its coding tool Claude Code has driven revenue growth among software engineers. Last month, secondary-market trading pushed Anthropic’s valuation to $1 trillion on some platforms.

Some company leaders are now debating whether continued heavy spending on AI tools, sometimes called tokenmaxxing, justifies the expense. Anthropic, OpenAI, and Elon Musk’s AI operations inside SpaceX are all expected to go public this year. 5 trillion valuation.
