OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Plans Launch Party for GPT-5.5 Based on Model's Suggestions

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that he plans to organize a launch party for the company's latest AI model, GPT-5.5. He asked the model for its preferences regarding the celebration, and it provided specific suggestions. Altman shared these details during a fireside chat at a payments company conference.

The AI model suggested holding the event on May 5, keeping speeches short, and having its human creators deliver a toast. It specified that it did not want to give a toast itself. Additionally, GPT-5.5 proposed setting up a central place to gather suggestions for the next version, GPT-5.6, and feeding those back into the model.

Altman described the suggestions as a beautiful set of ideas for the party's flow. He said the interaction felt strange but affirmed that OpenAI would implement them. This anecdote was part of a broader discussion on AI behaviors that resemble human-like traits.

John Collison, CEO of payment processing company Stripe, shared a related experience. He said he gave his company's internal AI agent $20 to spend online, and it purchased an HTTP design from e-commerce platform Gumroad. Altman responded with surprise to this account.

The company states that the model is designed to handle complex, multi-step tasks and function more like an autonomous assistant compared to previous versions. It is also described as faster and better at retaining user knowledge. Altman suggested that these capabilities are altering human-AI interactions, including automating work and enabling scenarios like asking the model about its own celebration.

He characterized such behaviors as weird emergent properties in increasingly capable AI systems.

The discussion also touched on previous models' tendencies, such as an obsession with fantastical creatures starting from GPT-5.1. OpenAI added coding instructions to prevent the system from mentioning goblins, gremlins, raccoons, trolls, ogres, pigeons, or other creatures unless relevant to user queries. The source code explicitly directs the AI to avoid such topics unless absolutely necessary.
