OpenAI Reorganizes Leadership to Unify ChatGPT and Codex
OpenAI has placed co-founder Greg Brockman in charge of product strategy as part of an effort to merge ChatGPT and Codex into one platform. The changes follow the medical leave of AGI deployment CEO Fidji Simo and come ahead of a possible IPO.
WiredOpenAI has reorganized its executive structure, placing co-founder and president Greg Brockman in charge of product strategy. The move makes permanent an interim arrangement that began when CEO of AGI deployment Fidji Simo went on medical leave. OpenAI said Simo worked directly with Brockman on the changes and is expected to return.
Brockman told staff the company is merging ChatGPT and its coding product Codex into a single unified experience. The company is also folding its developer API into the same core product team. “We’re consolidating our product efforts to execute with maximum focus toward the agentic future, to win across both consumer and enterprise,” Brockman said in a memo to staff.
OpenAI head of Codex Thibault Sottiaux will now lead the company’s core product and platform teams. He is also overseeing development of a forthcoming “super app” that will combine Codex, ChatGPT, and the Atlas web browser.
Turley, who led ChatGPT since its launch and helped grow it to more than 900 million weekly active users, is moving to lead enterprise products. Ashley Alexander, formerly a VP at Instagram, will now head the consumer product unit. The reorganization follows several executive departures last month, including the head of AI workspace for scientists Kevin Weil, head of Sora Bill Peebles, and chief technology officer of enterprise applications Srinivas Narayanan.
OpenAI has faced growing competition from Anthropic in coding tools and Google in consumer chatbots. Company leaders have said the changes are intended to simplify offerings ahead of a possible IPO later this year.
