Ozgur Ozel’s Faction Resigns From CHP Assembly, Triggering Congress Call After Court Chairman Sought Expulsions
Twenty-eight members of the 57-member Republican People's Party assembly resigned on Thursday. The move follows a court-appointed chairman's request to expel nine Ozel loyalists.
Twenty-eight members of the Republican People's Party assembly resigned on Thursday, June 11, 2026, according to a statement from Ozgur Ozel's office. The resignations represent nearly half of the 57-member body and amount to the fall of the party assembly. Ozgur Ozel is the ousted chairman of the CHP.
His office said the resignations should legally trigger an extraordinary congress to re-elect a chairman. The statement came one day after the court-appointed chairman asked for the expulsion of nine party assembly members loyal to Ozel. The office added that the fall of the assembly legally mandates a congress within 45 days.
Supporters of Ozel clashed with riot police during a rally in Izmir on May 26, 2026, while waiting for his arrival. The resignations were announced from Ankara.
