**Péter Magyar Inaugurated as Hungary's Prime Minister After Tisza Party Election Victory**
The 45-year-old leader of the Tisza party was sworn in on May 9 after his party secured 53 percent of the vote in April 12 elections. Tens of thousands gathered outside Parliament in Budapest as the new government moved immediately to restore the European Union flag to the building. The ceremony on Europe Day marked Hungary's symbolic return to the EU, officials said.
Péter Magyar was inaugurated as prime minister of Hungary on May 9 following the Tisza party's victory in the April 12 elections. According to Le Monde, jubilation marked the event in Budapest on Europe Day, with tens of thousands of supporters gathered outside Parliament.
Incoming Health Minister Zsolt Hegedus again performed the dancing routine that first gained attention on April 12, drawing crowds waving Hungarian and European flags.
Magyar’s Tisza party secured 53 percent of the vote on April 12. Parliament then appointed him prime minister by a vote of 140 out of 200 MPs. Agnes Forsthoffer of the Tisza party was elected speaker of Parliament the same day. Forsthoffer ordered the return of the EU flag to the facade of the parliament building.
The flag had been removed more than twelve years earlier by a predecessor from Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party.
Magyar told supporters the occasion showed “the best of Hungary, this joyful Hungary.” He described his rise to power as symbolizing Hungary’s return to the European Union. The inauguration formally ended Orban’s tenure, which had lasted 16 years since his Fidesz party first returned to power.
Hegedus’s dancing again drew attention at the ceremony, inspiring flag-waving crowds. A woman held a photograph of the new prime minister in front of Parliament as the celebrations continued.
