Péter Magyar was sworn in as prime minister of Hungary on May 9, 2026, ending Viktor Orbán’s 16-year rule. The 45-year-old former Fidesz insider took his place among lawmakers of the new national assembly on Saturday morning ahead of the oath, becoming the first prime minister in more than three decades not named Orbán. m.

Orbán was not among them, the first time since Hungary’s first post-Communist Parliament was formed in 1990 that he has been absent from the chamber. Magyar’s Tisza party controls 141 seats in the 199-seat parliament after defeating Orbán’s Fidesz in elections nearly a month earlier. Fidesz-KDNP holds 52 seats while the far-right Mi Hazánk party has six.

Tisza gained more votes and seats than any other party in Hungary’s post-Communist history and secured a two-thirds parliamentary majority. That supermajority allows the new government to roll back institutional changes enacted during Orbán’s tenure. The new national assembly has 54 women lawmakers, more than a quarter of the total and the highest number in the country’s history.

Several thousand people gathered in Kossuth Square outside Parliament as the swearing-in took place, many waving Hungarian and EU flags. Magyar had called on Hungarians to attend an all-day “regime-change” celebration on the square. m.

Local time after taking his oath. Magyar has promised to repair Hungary’s ties with the EU. Approximately 17 billion euros ($20 billion) of EU funds for Hungary remain frozen. Unlocking those funds is among his top priorities as the country’s economy has stagnated for the last four years.

“It’s officially a new era.”

— Zsolt Kerner, senior reporter at Hungarian online media 24.hu The incoming prime minister steered Tisza to a landslide victory nearly a month before the inauguration. He has pledged to restore Hungary’s place among Western democracies after years of tension with EU partners and closer ties to Russia under Orbán.
