Pakistan purchased one LNG cargo from BP for prompt delivery at $16.74 per mmBtu, about $1 above prevailing Asian spot prices in the $15 range, OilPrice.com reported. The transaction marks the latest effort by the state gas company to secure supply after Qatari LNG production and exports halted amid the war in the Middle East. Pakistan had relied on term contracts with Qatar for years.
Without those volumes, the country launched four tenders for prompt cargoes between April and June 2026. Several tenders received no accepted bids because even the lowest offers exceeded what Pakistan LNG considered affordable. In May 2026 Pakistan took delivery of its first LNG cargo in two months, a 140,000-cubic-meter shipment from the United States priced at $18.40 per mmBtu.
Earlier this month the company issued another tender with offers due June 29 for delivery between June 30 and July 4. The surge in energy prices contributed to Pakistan’s 11.7 percent year-on-year inflation rate in May 2026, according to the state statistics agency. Core inflation rose 9 percent on the year and 8 percent from the prior month.
