For the 40-day interim, ticketing systems will continue to display PBI while operational codes use DJT.
Delta, United, American Airlines, JetBlue and Southwest requested the IATA code change, which the association approved. Airlines have hard-coded their reservations, passenger-service and baggage systems to route PBI searches to the renamed airport, airline industry analyst Henry Harteveldt said.
"Airlines have told me that, at least initially, people who use the PBI code on their websites to search for flights will be directed to flights from what will now be called DJT," Harteveldt said.
The airport's website instructs passengers to continue using the PBI code until August 18. Flight attendants have been given discretion to greet passengers with "welcome to West Palm Beach" rather than the new name. Nearly eight million passengers fly through the airport annually.
Palm Beach County commissioners approved a licensing agreement in May allowing use of "Donald J. Trump" in the airport name. Under the agreement President Trump receives no royalties, fees or merchandise revenue.
