Japan TimesA government regulatory reform panel on Monday called for easing building standards for data centers to support artificial intelligence development. Lithium-ion batteries, used to maintain stable operations at data centers, are classified as hazardous materials under the fire service law and the building standards law.
The classification limits how many batteries can be installed. The panel proposed excluding lithium-ion batteries from those restrictions if new safety standards for batteries are introduced.
AI applications in labor sectors The proposal also addressed AI systems that control walking robots. Those systems are viewed as a way to address labor shortages in logistics, construction, and elderly care services. It recommended revising laws to allow full-scale demonstration tests of the technology.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated that the government will promote reforms of regulations and systems that fit the AI era.
