Panthers head coach had skin cancer removed from nose
The coach disclosed the procedure during minicamp after a routine screening two months earlier identified a small spot. The removed tissue was basal cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer.
nypost.comPanthers head coach Dave Canales appeared at the team's minicamp Tuesday wearing a bandage on the left side of his nose. He said the bandage covered the site of a recent procedure that removed a small spot of basal cell carcinoma. Two months earlier, a routine skin cancer screening had flagged the area for further attention.
Procedure details Canales described the removed tissue as basal cell carcinoma, which begins in the basal cells and is often linked to ultraviolet exposure. The procedure removed the spot completely, he said.
Background and family history Canales noted that his mother had the same condition in her 40s. He said the family history prompted him to use sunscreen regularly. Canales encouraged others to schedule similar screenings. The coach is 45 and has spent 16 seasons in the NFL, most recently as head coach after serving as the Buccaneers' offensive coordinator in 2023.
The team finished 5-12 in 2024 and reached the playoffs in 2025.
