Parents Push Some Schools to Restore Primary Homework
A number of parents are asking schools to bring back homework for primary students. Some schools have adjusted policies after hearing from families who want the practice.
A growing number of parents are asking primary schools to restore homework after years of schools moving away from the practice. One principal said that for every parent who opposes homework, there are probably three who want it. The principal added that most children need the routine and discipline homework provides.
Some schools have set aside specific weeks without homework so students can focus on activities outside school. A nine-year-old student said she looks forward to those weeks because they reduce pressure.
Public primary schools have begun to reverse earlier decisions against homework. One principal said the school recognized demand among some parents for the work. A parent who grew up in Malaysia said she moved her son to a Catholic school after learning his public school did not assign homework until year 3. She said homework helps families see what children are learning.
Its chief executive said students sometimes complete tutoring work during regular class time. A University of Sydney education expert said research finds no benefit from homework in primary school and that it can reduce family time. She noted many families see homework as a familiar way to stay connected to school.
The NSW Department of Education allows schools to set their own homework policies. State guidelines advise against formal homework in kindergarten and suggest reading books at home instead.
