A video shared on social media captured a passenger opening an emergency door on a flight delayed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The flight, bound for Chicago, was held on the tarmac due to a ground stoppage at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport caused by severe thunderstorms.

The passenger expressed frustration over the delays before taking action. The man, described as having a gray goatee and wearing a hat, was heard yelling into a plane phone about the length of the delay, which he estimated at three to four hours with an additional hour expected.

He demanded to be let off the plane and then grabbed the handle of the emergency door, opening it partially. A woman nearby reacted with surprise, and another person attempted to intervene.

The passenger stated that he would take himself off the plane if not allowed to disembark. After opening the door, he responded to intervention by saying it did not matter who the intervener was and emphasizing his own importance. The video ended with the captain announcing over the intercom that the plane would return to the gate.

The airline confirmed that while waiting for takeoff, a customer became unruly and attempted to open a cabin door. The door handle was partially opened, but the slide did not deploy. The plane, carrying 168 passengers, taxied back to the gate, and the unruly passenger was removed by security.

from Flightaware indicated the plane left the gate at 7:38 p.m. but did not take off until 12:44 a.m., resulting in more than five hours on the tarmac. The flight arrived in Chicago at 3:00 a.m. local time.

The safety of our customers and crew comes before all else, and [the airline] has zero tolerance for unruly behavior," a spokesperson said in a statement. "We apologize to our customers on this flight for the delay in their travels." Maintenance crews inspected the door and cleared it for takeoff later that night. Aviation authorities are investigating the incident.
