Paul McCartney Discusses New Album and Beatles Memories

Paul McCartney discussed his new album The Boys of Dungeon Lane during an interview in his London office. The record contains 14 tracks spanning multiple musical styles and focuses on personal memories from his Liverpool childhood and time with the Beatles.

McCartney described writing songs about his parents and early experiences in post-war Liverpool. One track, Salesman Saint, references the music and radio programs his parents enjoyed, while the opening song As You Lie There recalls a teenage crush.

The album was recorded over five years with producer Andrew Watt. McCartney said he began writing As You Lie There in 2020 during a meeting in Los Angeles. Another track, Lost Horizon, originated from an early 2000s demo that engineer Eddie Klein had preserved.

McCartney also spoke about playing guitar with actor Paul Mescal. He stated that Mescal knew the part better than he did during their session.

McCartney addressed his portrayal in Peter Jackson's Get Back documentary. He said the film changed his view of the period surrounding the Beatles' breakup and relieved him of earlier self-criticism. He recalled hitchhiking across Europe with bandmates John Lennon, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison in the early 1960s.

McCartney noted that shared experiences strengthened their songwriting partnership.
