New Pelicans coach says he wants to develop Zion Williamson as playmaker

Jamahl Mosley was introduced Tuesday as the New Orleans Pelicans' new head coach. At the introductory news conference, Mosley said he wants to expand Zion Williamson's role on offense. "He hasn't even scratched the surface of things he can do," Mosley told reporters.

roster The Pelicans have won 26 and 21 games in the past two seasons. Williamson averaged 21.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and shot 60 percent in 62 games last season. Mosley also said the team will focus on developing young players including Trey Murphy III, Jeremiah Fears and Derik Queen. The roster includes veterans Dejounte Murray, Saddiq Bey and Herb Jones.

Coaching approach Mosley said the Pelicans will be "unapologetically physical" on defense. He added that the team must build habits and daily routines to reach a higher level. Joe Dumars, the Pelicans' executive vice president of basketball operations, said the organization spent hours speaking with Mosley before hiring him.

Dumars said Mosley aligned with the team's vision and that owner Gayle Benson approved the resources to bring Mosley and his staff to New Orleans.
