A 28-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman have been charged with murder after their newborn son died at Tower Health Reading Hospital in Pennsylvania. Kevin Canaan, 28, and Yennifer Tavarez-Cepeda, 25, are accused of abusing their son in a private room at the hospital on May 2, shortly after his birth, the Berks County District Attorney’s Office said Tuesday.

Medical staff reported the baby was born seemingly healthy but was later found in medical distress.

The infant was rushed to Penn State Hershey Medical Center for advanced neonatal care and was pronounced dead there. An autopsy showed the baby had suffered multiple traumatic internal injuries that were not caused during delivery, according to the district attorney’s office.

Authorities said the parents were alone with the child in the recovery room for a short period before the injuries were discovered. Prosecutors charged Canaan and Tavarez-Cepeda with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, and endangering the welfare of children.

The Berks County Sheriff’s Office arrested both parents. The case remains under investigation by local authorities.
