nypost.comPennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said he holds profound differences with Darializa Avila Chevalier, the Democratic nominee for New York's 13th Congressional District. nypost.com reported that Shapiro made the remarks on CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday.
"Her district voted for her, but I have profound differences from that particular candidate," Shapiro stated. " Shapiro described Chevalier as a socialist whose voters selected her as their representative. He said the Democratic Party needs to hold a battle over its beliefs, an internal process the party has not undertaken since the 1992 election cycle.
Chevalier defeated Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the June 23 primary for the district that covers parts of Upper Manhattan and the West Bronx. She is a self-described democratic socialist who has called for abolishing prisons and eliminating ICE.
Chevalier also called former President Joe Biden a rapist and posted about wiping her dirty hands on the American flag. Shapiro sidestepped a question about how his Jewish identity might affect a potential 2028 presidential bid and instead emphasized authenticity in public service.
"My faith teaches me that no one's required to complete the task, but neither are we free to refrain from it," Shapiro said.
