The Pentagon on May 8, 2026 unveiled a new website housing all declassified files related to UAP and made more than 100 documents public the same day. @CBSNews reported that the release includes detailed accounts from NASA's Apollo 17 mission in December 1972, when the crew reported seeing three mysterious dots in a triangular formation as well as bright tumbling sparks and jagged fragments that resembled fireworks.

A NASA photograph taken in December 1972 during the Apollo 17 mission shows three dots in a triangular formation in the lower right quadrant of the lunar sky.

The three dots are clearly visible upon magnification of the image. There is no consensus about the nature of the anomaly, but a new preliminary analysis indicated it could be a physical object.

Pilot Harrison Schmitt reported: "There's a whole bunch of big ones on my window down there — just bright. " Mission commander Eugene Cernan had difficulty sleeping after observing flashing that he compared to an imposing train headlight. Over the next three hours, Eugene Cernan described observing several flashing, rotating phenomena that he assessed as corresponding to physical objects in space rather than a purely optical phenomenon.

Eugene Cernan was the mission commander of Apollo 17, Ronald Evans was the pilot of Apollo 17 and Harrison Schmitt was the pilot of Apollo 17. The documents also include a transcript of the 1969 Apollo 11 crew debriefing. Buzz Aldrin said: "The first unusual thing that we saw I guess was one day out or something pretty close to the moon.

The Apollo 11 mission occurred in 1969 and the Apollo 17 mission occurred in 1972. Buzz Aldrin said he was trying to go to sleep with all the lights out when he observed what he thought were little flashes inside the cabin, spaced a couple of minutes apart. " The Pentagon said additional documents and videos will be released on a rolling basis.
