Pentagon seeks $21 billion for munitions as U.S.-Iran fighting and mediation efforts continue

The Pentagon requested $21 billion in emergency funding to replenish munitions expended in the conflict with Iran as part of a nearly $90 billion supplemental budget request submitted last month, of which $67.1 billion would cover operational costs incurred by the Department of War during Operation Epic Fury.

War Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman Dan Caine testified before the Senate Appropriations Committee on July 21 about the request.

Resumed hostilities between the U.S. and Iran entered an 11th day as of July 21. Iran struck targets in Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain on July 21. Jordanian air defense systems intercepted and shot down three Iranian missiles targeting Jordan, with no injuries or material damage reported.

Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan has been attacked multiple times, including one incident that killed three U.S. troops.

The Pentagon identified 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, and Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Carrollton, Texas, as two of those killed; the identity of the third remains pending. Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton, 30, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, was killed in action on July 19 during a controlled detonation of a downed One-Way Unmanned Aerial System at Erbil Air Base in Iraq.

Kuwaiti air defenses confronted hostile missile and drone attacks on July 21, while Iranian attacks had targeted Kuwaiti power and water desalination plants for the fourth consecutive day.

Bahrain sounded air raid sirens due to the attacks. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed it struck an Amazon data center in Bahrain. Three tankers were struck in the Strait of Hormuz on July 20-21, with crews abandoning ship in two cases. A total of 37 tankers have been attacked there through July 20.
