New York PostPG&E announced possible Public Safety Power Shutoffs that could affect about 7,382 customers across 15 Northern California counties this weekend. The utility said the region faces strong winds, extremely dry air, and brittle vegetation that could allow a single spark to ignite a major wildfire.
PG&E spokesperson Megan McFarland stated that high winds can blow vegetation and tree branches into overhead distribution lines and create sparks.
County is expected to have the largest number of customers impacted, with 2,967 at risk. Tehama County follows with 1,129 customers, and Glenn County with 971 customers. The utility also identified 296 Medical Baseline customers who rely on electricity for critical medical needs and could be affected if shutoffs occur.
Customers were notified Friday afternoon, roughly 48 hours before any possible shutdowns. PG&E said power could be cut as early as Sunday morning and may remain off into Monday, depending on conditions. Kia Xiong with San Joaquin County stated that local leaders are coordinating with PG&E and emergency agencies to help residents prepare emergency kits.
