PGA Tour to Split Schedule into Championship and Challenger Series Starting in 2028

Brian Rolapp announced Tuesday that the PGA Tour will split its schedule into a Championship Series and a Challenger Series beginning in 2028. Championship Series events will require fields of at least 120 players, include a halfway cut, bar sponsor exemptions and carry purses of at least $20 million. Relegation and promotion will link the two tiers.

Collin Morikawa, who won at Pebble Beach earlier in 2026 for his first PGA Tour victory since October 2023, said he has not heard negative feedback from fellow players. “No, no, no, and you know, I think there hasn’t been as much talk amongst us players as you might think, and I think that’s a good thing,” Morikawa told The Rich Eisen Show.

” The 29-year-old Californian added that the format would increase direct competition.

“You’re going to see a lot of us compete against each other a lot more with slightly bigger fields, with cuts, like things that are natural to the game of golf,” he said. ” Morikawa had already expressed support for larger fields and cuts earlier this month.

One month after his Pebble Beach win, he injured his back on the first hole at TPC Sawgrass during The Players Championship and has continued to compete while recovering.
