Phage-Delivered CRISPR-Cas12 System Developed to Target Shiga Toxin Gene in E. coli

A team encapsulated an engineered CRISPR-Cas12 therapeutic inside a phage therapy delivery system to create a precision antimicrobial for Shiga toxin-producing E. coli. The system is designed to cleave the Stx gene that produces the toxin.
@ScienceMagazine reported that the therapy combats infection in animals. The approach pairs the gene-cutting activity of CRISPR-Cas12 with the bacteria-targeting capability of phages. Researchers developed the construct specifically for strains that carry the Stx gene.
The work focuses on animal infections caused by these toxin-producing bacteria.
