Philadelphia Teen Suspect Captured in Colorado Springs After Month-Long Manhunt

Azzubair Outen-Fleming, 16, was captured July 1 in Colorado Springs by the U.S. Marshals Service Colorado Violent Offender Task Force after a nearly month-long manhunt, the New York Post reported. He was found at a distant relative’s home and initially tried to deny his identity.

Outen-Fleming and Kaiseem Smith, also 16, are accused of ambushing and fatally shooting Billy Schmidt at about 1:30 a.m. on June 6 in South Philadelphia. Schmidt had been walking home from an NBA Finals watch party when the pair approached him, according to District Attorney Larry Krasner.

Outen-Fleming allegedly grabbed Schmidt’s phone, punched him, and went through his pockets. Surveillance footage showed two masked individuals pushing Schmidt to the ground before walking away. Schmidt followed the suspects; Smith allegedly pulled a gun from his back pocket and fired the fatal shot to Schmidt’s chest, the New York Post reported.

Both suspects fled in an SUV. Schmidt was taken to Penn-Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. He had completed his third year studying digital journalism and media at Penn State University.

Outen-Fleming was arrested and charged with murder, robbery, and conspiracy to murder, among other crimes. He is being held at the Zebulon Pike Youth Center awaiting extradition to Philadelphia. His stepfather, Donte Abdulmalik, 35, was arrested the same day for allegedly helping Outen-Fleming flee Philadelphia.

Abdulmalik faces charges of hindering apprehension, obstruction of justice, and tampering with evidence. Smith remains at large. Officials have offered a $5,000 reward for his capture. He is described as 4-foot-10.
