Philippine Quake Kills 41, Leaves Thousands Displaced
A magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck off Mindanao on Monday, killing at least 41 people and injuring more than 450. Rescue efforts continued Tuesday amid aftershock concerns and access difficulties in Sarangani province.
Doctors treated patients in tents under a scorching sun on Tuesday, including assisting a young mother during childbirth, as the death toll from a magnitude-7.8 earthquake reached 41. The quake struck off the southern island of Mindanao on Monday, collapsing buildings and leaving thousands displaced, according to national and local disaster agencies.
Four people remain missing and more than 450 others were injured.
In hardest-hit Sarangani province, some areas remain accessible only by helicopter, local officials said at a Tuesday briefing. Fears of aftershocks have slowed rescue operations. Passengers on a pickup truck viewed a damaged building in General Santos on Tuesday, one day after the quake.
