The Philippine Senate opened an impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte on Monday. The proceedings center on allegations that she misused confidential funds allocated to the Office of the Vice President and made threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in statements from December 2024.
The Senate received the articles of impeachment from the House of Representatives on June 30. A conviction requires the support of at least 16 of the 24 senators. Senate President Francis Escudero is presiding and stated that the proceedings would follow Senate rules with senators acting as judges.
Thousands of police officers were deployed around the Senate building in Manila. The Philippine National Police said the deployment was for security purposes. No incidents were reported on the first day.
