BANGKOK — An 11-year-old boy crashed a pickup truck into a group of Buddhist monks on a pilgrimage walk in northeastern Thailand on Thursday, killing nine. A total of 35 monks from Mukdahan province, about 600 kilometers northeast of Bangkok, were on the 260-kilometer walk to Ubon Ratchathani province. The group had started the journey about 30 minutes before the crash.
Five monks died at the site and four others at a hospital. Thirteen monks were hospitalized, with three in critical condition, according to the provincial administration. Security camera footage shows the monks walking in a single line on the side of the road before the truck struck them.
Monks described seeing the vehicle swerving before it slid off the road. The boy is in police custody and will be questioned when state child protection officers arrive. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
