The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired outfielder Robert Hassell III from the Washington Nationals on July 16 for cash or a player to be named later. 215 with two home runs and 21 RBI for Triple-A Rochester this season. 223 with three home runs and 18 RBI in 70 games.
Hassell was selected by the San Diego Padres in the first round of the 2020 draft. He ranked among MLB Pipeline's top-40 prospects in both 2022 and 2023. He was part of the 2022 trade that sent Juan Soto from the Nationals to the Padres.
James Wood, CJ Abrams and MacKenzie Gore also moved from San Diego to Washington in that deal and have since produced in the majors, while Hassell has yet to establish himself at the big-league level.
