The Nationals rallied from an early four-run deficit against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday but lost 11-5 after their relievers allowed seven runs in the final two innings. The Pirates scored first with a series of base hits against Nationals starter Cade Cavalli. Cavalli allowed six hits and four runs over 2 1/3 innings before being removed.
Late rally falls short First baseman Luis Garcia Jr. hit a two-run home run in the third inning, his 19th of the season. Outfielder Dylan Crews scored on a groundout in the fourth, and shortstop C.J. Abrams drove in the tying run in the fifth. The Nationals stranded two runners to end the fifth inning with the score tied 4-4.
Pirates pull away in eighth The Pirates loaded the bases against Nationals reliever Brad Lord in the eighth. Konnor Griffin delivered a two-run single, and Brandon Lowe followed with a three-run home run. Pittsburgh added two more runs in the ninth to finish with an 11-5 victory.
