PJM Interconnection recorded electricity demand of roughly 163 gigawatts on Thursday. The figure came within about 2,500 megawatts of the grid's 2006 record of 165,563 megawatts. The grid serves 67 million people across 13 states and Washington, D.C. A heat dome pushed heat indices above 110 degrees from Washington to New York, according to Reuters.
Wholesale electricity prices exceeded $2,000 per megawatt-hour. Operating reserves fell to 5,091 megawatts.
PJM data show nearly all projected demand growth through 2030 comes from data centers. Capacity costs have risen more than 11-fold in recent periods. Wednesday's preliminary peak reached 161,910 megawatts, among the highest readings the grid has recorded.
