PJM Interconnection issued a Maximum Generation Alert for July 3, 2026, directing power producers to maximize electricity output across its footprint. The same alert and a Load Management Alert had already been active on July 2. The alerts ask generators and transmission owners to increase production and defer or cancel any scheduled maintenance or testing that could take units offline.
They do not require any action from customers, OilPrice.com reported. A Hot Weather Alert from PJM remains in effect through July 4. Extreme heat has gripped more than two dozen states across the Midwest, the South, and the East Coast, driving electricity demand for cooling to near record levels.
PJM's territory covers 13 mid-Atlantic and Midwest states plus the District of Columbia and serves about 67 million people. The grid operator stated it is taking proactive steps to maintain reliable operations during the heat wave.
