Planned Parenthood and Two Providers Resume Medicaid Billing for Non-Abortion Services

Planned Parenthood and two smaller regional abortion providers reinstated Medicaid billing for non-abortion services on Sunday. The defunding had been required by President Donald Trump’s tax and policy law enacted last year. @Independent reported that billing resumed on 2026-07-05.

Planned Parenthood affiliates closed nearly 30 of approximately 600 clinics over the past year due to the funding change. Affiliates dispensed about 25 percent fewer packs of birth control pills and conducted roughly 20 percent fewer breast cancer exams during the funding-cut period compared to the previous year. The Arizona affiliate paused many services for Medicaid-covered patients.

Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin temporarily halted abortions for about a month before dropping its essential community provider status to resume seeking reimbursement. Maine Family Planning closed three primary care clinics that served approximately 1,000 patients.

Evelyn Kieltyka stated on Monday that former patients faced an average wait of four to six months to establish care with new providers.

Health Imperatives in Massachusetts did not drop any services because the state government covered the federal Medicaid reimbursements that ceased. Planned Parenthood states that 14 states covered Medicaid reimbursements in some form after the federal cuts. Health Imperatives received a grant from Melinda Gates’s foundation.

Planned Parenthood’s Arizona affiliate announced expanded hours and more telehealth options linked to renewed Medicaid billing ability. Maine Family Planning does not plan to reopen its primary care practices. A closed Planned Parenthood clinic in Lakeland, Florida is not expected to reopen.
