Podiatrists Recommend Sandals With Arch Support and Secure Straps for Walking
Podiatrists identify built-in arch support and thick, multi-point straps as key features for comfortable walking sandals. Several models from Birkenstock, Oofos, OluKai, Teva, Naot, and Clarks are cited for meeting these criteria.
Nbc NewsPodiatrists say the main factors that make sandals comfortable for walking are built-in arch support and thick straps that hold the foot in place. Thin or stretchy straps force the foot to grip the sandal, which shortens the gait and can cause fatigue in the feet, knees, hips, and lower back, according to Dr. Mikel Daniels, president and chief medical officer of We Treat Feet Podiatry.
Features to Prioritize Dr.
Tek Fish, podiatrist and owner of Clover Podiatry, advises checking that the sandal bends only at the ball of the foot when folded and that the midsole provides shock absorption without excessive compression. Dr. Chandana Halaharvi, foot and ankle surgeon and owner of Thrive Foot & Ankle, states that straps should secure the foot across the midfoot, ankle, or top of the toes to reduce the need for constant toe gripping.
Oofos Ooahh Recovery Slides are noted for their contoured footbed and high cushioning, though they are not offered in half sizes. OluKai Ohana Flip Flops are recommended for wider and flatter feet, with arch support and a quick-drying insole. Naot Kayla Women’s Sandals feature a slight wedge, multiple straps, and are offered in narrow, regular, and wide widths.
Clarks Men’s Walkford Slides have a wide midfoot band, built-in arch support, and are available in regular and wide widths.
