Poland signs $4.8 billion deal with Saab for three submarines to replace Soviet-era fleet

Saab has finalized a SEK 47 billion contract with the Polish government for three A26 submarines, Breaking Defense reported. The $4.8 billion agreement covers production of the vessels to replace Poland’s Soviet-era Kilo-class submarines. The contract was announced seven months after Poland selected Saab’s offer.

It includes a weapon package and a training-support element, with final deliveries planned for 2038. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said the deal will make the Polish Navy one of the strongest in NATO. He added that hundreds of Polish companies will become new subcontractors to Saab.

Saab is investing up to €100 million in Poland as part of the arrangement. Micael Johansson, president and CEO of Saab, said the submarines meet Poland’s current and future defence requirements and will enhance security in the Baltic Sea region. The A26 submarines are equipped with long-range precision strike torpedoes and can carry submarine-launched missiles for targets at sea and on land, according to Saab.
