Police Raid Anti-Corruption Commission Offices in Probe of 2024 Handbag Case Closure

Police raided the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission offices in Sejong on Monday as part of an investigation into the agency's 2024 decision to drop a case involving former first lady Kim Keon Hee's acceptance of a Dior handbag. A special investigation team under the National Police Agency carried out the search and seizure at the offices 107 kilometers south of Seoul.
The probe examines allegations of abuse of power against former chairperson Ryu Chul-whan and former deputy chairperson Chung Seung-yun.
In 2024 the commission terminated the inquiry into the 2022 gift without further action after determining that no regulation required a presidential spouse to report such items. The commission opened a task force in March 2026 to reexamine that decision after a new chief assumed the post. Former President Yoon Suk Yeol had been ousted in December 2024 following his martial law declaration.
President Lee Jae Myung took office after the 2025 election. In May 2026 the commission referred the matter to police for additional investigation. Yonhap reported the details of the raid and its connection to the earlier case closure.
