Police Release Arrested Man but Continue Murder Investigation into Former MP Ann Widdecombe's Death

Devon and Cornwall Police released a 26-year-old man from custody on Saturday after arresting him Friday on suspicion of murdering former MP Ann Widdecombe. The man is no longer part of the investigation. Police believe Widdecombe, 78, was attacked at her Haytor home on Wednesday July 8 at around 12:30pm.

Ambulance crews called officers to the property at 11:40am on Thursday, where she was found dead with serious injuries. The Force Major Crime Investigation Team is leading the case. Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said the suspect sought by police is believed to be a white male.

He stated the killing is not being treated as terrorism and that police have no information suggesting it was politically motivated. A cordon remains in place at the property while forensic examinations continue, with road closures around the scene. Widdecombe's next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

Police have consulted Counter Terrorism Policing as part of initial enquiries. Longman appealed for anyone with information about the incident to come forward, however insignificant it may seem. He asked people not to speculate about what might have happened, particularly on social media.
